Fisherman saves fox cub from gang that had already shot its mother dead

A baby fox that was rescued from a cruel beating by a gang of thugs is set to recover and return to the wild.

The cub was allegedly being kicked by a gang in Norfolk, while her dead mother lay nearby, when she was saved by a man returning from night fishing.

The gang appeared to have already shot and killed the cub’s mother, and were kicking the cub when the rescuer arrived on the scene in the early hours of Sunday 19 April.

According to the man, who did not wish to be named, punches were exchanged as he intended to rescue the cub.

“We got into a dispute over the way he was going about his business and I was informed I was interfering and should go away," the Western Daily Press reported. “The fox was very distressed. You cannot look into the eyes of something like that and kick it to death.”

After the altercation he grabbed the young cub and took her home to care for it. He then made contact with the Foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue Centre who cared for the cub now in recovery.

The cub was believed to have internal injuries when she arrived at the centre, and rejected food for hours after being admitted.

Still a little bruised, she is now making a good recovery, eating small amounts and will return to the wild in around four months’ time.

Mr and Mrs Garner set up the Foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue Centre in Hemsby six years ago, using money from their wedding.
