Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A former soldier who stabbed to death his two young sons with a screwdriver was found hanged by shoelaces in his prison cell yesterday.

Steven Wilson, 44, was found by a fellow prisoner inside his cell at Blakenhurst Prison hanging from an upturned bed.

Wilson was found guilty six days ago of murdering Brad, seven, and Brett, eight, in a fit of anger after his wife told him their marriage was over.

He murdered the children at a golf course near Handsworth and then rang his wife, tellin gher: "I've killed the kids and I'm going to kill myself." He then thrust the screwdriver into his own chest.

Mr Justice Hughes, while sentencing Wilson to two life terms, told him: "You took those boys' lives to revenge yourself on your wife."

Wilson, of Great Barr, Birmingham, was taken to the category-B Blakenhurst prison, Worcestershire, last week for assessment and was not believed to be on suicide watch.

The Prison Service is holding an investigation.
