From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Police officers caught a motorist driving along a motorway with their feet on the dashboard.

A picture taken by the police shows the driver in the right-hand lane of the M5 in the West Country.

The driver was pictured in a black pickup-style car, and the image caused shock among Twitter users after it was shared online.

Devon and Cornwall Police and Dorset Police roads policing team posted the picture to its Twitter account.

The officer who posted the picture said: “Cruise control taken to a whole new level. Driver snapped in lane 3 (yes the fast lane) of the M5.

“With apologies to the mighty Pink Floyd: ‘In all my years of policing I have never seen before, Someone more deserving the full penalty of law’!! Sgt B.”

The tweet attracted a string of responses on social media, including one from another local police officer.

PC Phil Skedgell, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said the motorist’s actions were ”utterly stupid and dangerous”. He added: On which planet would or could this be considered appropriate?”
