A dog walker has been killed by a falling tree in a Liverpool woodland.

The man, in his 60s, was struck by a branch in Black Wood, Woolton, on Tuesday morning, police said.

Emergency services, including police, fire and ambulance crews, were called to the scene.

The area has been sealed off and a police cordon remains in place.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that officers are currently in Woolton following reports a male dog walker had been seriously injured by a falling tree.

“Emergency services were called at 11.05am and are currently at the scene in Black Wood, close to Wood View Road.”

Officials later confirmed the man had died, adding: ”We can confirm that the man hit by the falling tree branch in Black Wood in Woolton has sadly passed away.

“The man, who is in his 60s and from the Liverpool area, has now been identified and his next of kin have been informed.”

It came as the Met Office said another named weather system – Storm Dennis – was set to bring more very wet and windy weather this the weekend, after widespread disruption caused by Storm Ciara over the weekend.
