Canada Water underground station is set to be renamed Buxton Water on the day of the London Marathon as part of a £110,000 sponsorship deal.

Branded artwork and roundels at the station will be changed to announce the day-long change – which is the first rebrand in the Tube’s history. Exterior signs, station announcements and Tube maps will not be altered.

Graeme Craig, Director of Commercial Development at TfL, said: “For one day only, customers will see Canada Water station transformed into Buxton Water station as part of their support of the Virgin Money London Marathon. This is a significant deal and the revenue will be reinvested back into our network for the benefit of our customers.”

The scheme is part of a wider plan to generate £3.4bn over the coming decade for Transport for London.

It comes after London Conservatives called for the Tube, one of London’s most recognisable features, to be commercially branded to increase non-fare income.

Buxton Water is this the official partner of this year’s London Marathon and free bottles of Buxton Water will be handed out to runners.

Caroline Juin, Head of Marketing at Nestle Waters UK, commented: “Renaming a London Underground station Buxton Water on the day of the marathon not only showcases our commitment to the event, but raises awareness of the importance of drinking enough water, whether it be on your daily commute or running a marathon.”

The London Marathon will take place on Sunday 26 April.
