At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Residents were evacuated after a man's body and “ornamental weapons” were discovered in a home in Keynsham on Friday morning. Police called in explosive disposal experts and oversaw the evacuation of neighbours as a precaution.
Steve Grimshaw, 51, who lives in the street, told Bristol Live he was called by police at 9.30am and was told to leave his house.
He said: “They said, 'Can you leave the area if able because we have got the big boys coming down'? They wouldn’t tell me anything more.”
Police are treating the incident as a “sudden death” and it will be referred to the coroner. It is believed the man who died was a collector of military items, which is why he had the weapons and ammo.
A small cordon was put in place but it has since been lifted and neighbours have returned to their homes.
The bomb disposal squad remained on standby in case anything else was found as officers searched the house.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: “A quantity of what appears to be ornamental weapons and ammunition have been found in the property, which may date back to the second world war.
“As a precaution, the Explosives Ordnance Disposal have been advised and are attending to check it out.
“On their advice immediate neighbours who were initially evacuated have been allowed back into the adjoining property.”
