From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The death last week of the Holby City actress Laura Sadler was not suspicious, police said yesterday.

Ms Sadler, 22, fellfrom the balcony of her boyfriend's flat in London. George Calil, 30, who also played Ms Sadler's on-screen boyfriend, was arrested and taken to Notting Hill police station after the incident on 15 June and was released on bail.

He returned to a police station yesterday and was formally released with no further action.

An inquest into Ms Sadler's death was opened and adjourned at Fulham coroner's court on Monday. She suffered massive head injuries when she fell from the second floor balcony. She died in Charing Cross hospital on 19 June after her life-support machine was switched off.

Ms Sadler, who played staff nurse Sandy Harper, had appeared in the BBC1 drama for three years.

Mr Calil played a drug dealer calledSean Hunt who was dating her character in the series. He said he was "absolutely devastated" after Ms Sadler's fall and said she was "the love of my life". He said: "I am so incredibly upset over this - I just cannot believe what has happened."

At the request of Ms Sadler's family and as a tribute to her, she will continue to appear in Holby City for the remaining eight episodes she had already filmed.
