At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The women, who has been identified only as Jacqui, required psychiatric treatment and considered suicide after discovering the true identity of her child's father.
She first met undercover officer Bob Lambert when he posed as a left wing radical in 1984, but in reality he was part of a secret police unit attempting to infiltrate environmental and animal rights groups.
In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Jacqui said the pay out would not bring her any closure as the police had not admitted any fault.
The compensation is believed to be the first of its kind.
Previously she commented that the experience had left her feeling like she had been “raped by the state”.
The Met said it “unreservedly apologised for any pain and suffering” caused.
