Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Whether you stayed up late watching three episodes of The Good Wife instead of one, accidentally finished the whole bottle of red or got lost in an internet well of stupid videos about Chihuahuas using neck massagers, a cup of coffee is an early morning panacea for many workers, vital to stifling 11am yawns.
It seems a caffeine injection is more important in some professions than others however, as a poll by Pressat has revealed.
Journalists were found to be consuming the most coffee (this is lies, I subsist entirely on Um Bongo), followed by police officers and teachers.
Other stereotypically high stress careers feature in the top 10, including medical staff and company executives, while plumbers and builders came in fourth – flying in the face of their purported love of tea.
Of the 10,000 professionals surveyed, 85 per cent admitted to drinking at least three cups of coffee a day, while 70 per cent said that they believe their work performance would be affected without it.
The findings make for quite depressing reading really, especially given that drinking copious amounts of coffee to kick start your system is repeatedly linked in studies with risks to health.
Here's the top 10 professions by coffee consumption:
1. Journalists and media staff
2. Police officers
3. Teachers
4. Plumbers and trade workers
5. Nurses and medical staff
6. Company executives
7. Telesales
8. IT technical support
9. Retail staff
10. Drivers
