Founder and Deputy Editor of the Independent, Matthew Symonds, is to resign. He intends to leave the newspaper at the end of August.
Andreas Whittam Smith, the Chairman of Newspaper Publishing and Editor of the Independent, said last night: 'Matthew has been a tower of strength at the Independent ever since its inception.
'It is not going too far to say that without him, the Independent would neither have existed nor prospered. He leaves with the thanks of the company and a profound debt of personal gratitude from me.'
Mr Symonds said: 'Although I am looking forward to new challenges, nothing can diminish the exhilaration and satisfaction of being part of such a great adventure for the last nine years.
'I will always be grateful to Andreas for inviting me to join him at the very beginning and for the strength of his friendship during our long partnership. I wish my colleagues at City Road, and the newspapers, every future success.'
