Detectives have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of a woman's body in woodland.

Officers from Surrey Police were called shortly before 11.30pm yesterday to a report of a concern for safety and then attended an address in West Street, Haslemere.

Following inquiries, they then went to Blackdown Woods near Lurgashall, West Sussex, where a search of the woodland led to the discovery of the body of a woman in her 30s.

Police have cordoned off an area of woodland while forensic officers carry out their investigations.

The woman has not yet been formally identified and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place tomorrow afternoon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, police said.

A 35-year-old man from Haslemere has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Surrey Police on 01483 571212.
