The body of a woman was found in a flat after officers shot an armed man during a stand-off in a supermarket, police said today.

Police opened fire on a man in Morrisons in Ten Perch Road, Canterbury, Kent, at around 8.40pm last night following reports of an armed man inside.

Kent Police said today that after the shooting, the body of a woman was found in a flat in Victoria Road in the city in the early hours of this morning.

A police spokesman said: "The death is being treated as suspicious and police are carrying out a forensic examination at the address in Victoria Street.

"Detectives are waiting to question a man who is currently in hospital receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to the arm."

Earlier, sources said the man was seen waving the firearm in the supermarket but did not threaten anyone.

It was believed he was shot by an officer after refusing to obey orders to put the weapon down.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been notified, and said it had begun inquiries last night.

A police spokesman said the man's injuries were not thought to be life threatening. No-one else was injured and a weapon was recovered at the scene.

A Morrisons spokesman said today: "We can confirm that there was an incident and that we are helping police with their inquiries. The police are fully investigating the incident."
