A woman was charged last night with murdering her former lover and attempting to kill his fiancee in a suspected poisoning.

Lakhvinder Cheema, 39, died in hospital on Wednesday after sharing a meal with Gurjeeta Kaur, 21, who was left fighting for her life in London's West Middlesex Hospital.

The Metropolitan Police said Lakhvir Kaur, 39, of Marlborough Road, Southall, would appear before Ealing magistrates today charged with murder and attempted murder.

A 54-year-old man who was also arrested in Windsor, Berkshire, yesterday has been bailed until a date in March, the police said.

Officers were called to West Middlesex Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday. Mr Cheema, of Princes Road, Feltham, was treated there but was pronounced dead at 2.36am.

A post-mortem examination was inconclusive and detectives await the results of further toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.
