Wife of Mafia boss arrested in UK
The British wife of a Mafia "Godfather" has been arrested on suspicion of helping to run his crime empire. Ann Hathaway, 44, was taken into custody on an extradition warrant issued by the Italian authorities. Officers detained her at her home in Middleton, near Manchester. Ms Hathaway went to Italy to be a dancer and later married Antonio Rinzivillo, before moving to Sicily, the home of the Mafia.
Police sources said that she had lived in Rome until November and had then returned to her native Britain. Ms Hathaway, who has two children, had been living in the Manchester area with her two daughters, close to her parents' home.
Her husband's alleged crime gang were involved in money-laundering mainly through public building contracts and cash made from drug dealing, extortion and arms running. Rinzivillo is serving 30 years in prison.
