One person has died and five people are seriously injured after a car ploughed into a Costa Coffee in Kent in what one witness described as "the worst accident they have ever seen".

The car, believed to have been an Audi with two people onboard, crashed through the window of the popular high street coffee shop chain on The Green, Westerham, Kent, at around 10.30am.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed to The Independent one individual, a woman in her 70s, had died on the scene.

Four people, two men and two women, were seriously injured in the crash. Two were taken to St George’s Hospital in London while the other two were transported to the Princess Royal in Farnborough.

One woman sustained “minor injuries” and was taken to Pembury Hospital nearby.

It is believed the two occupants of the car were among those injured, although The Independent understands the driver of the vehicle was not the deceased.

Witness Bridget Rowe told local newspaper the Seven Oaks Chronicle the sound of the crash was “like a bomb had gone off”.

The car had reportedly been seen clipping other vehicles as was driven into the town from the direction of Oxted.

Several ambulances and at least two fire engines were pictured at the scene, as locals reeled in shock after what many described as “the worst accident they have ever seen”.

Kent police confirmed they had been called to the scene at 10.32am, and that the road remained closed as authorities worked.
