A teenager is facing jail after pleading guilty to beating up a traffic warden in a daylight assault.

Danyal Bashir, aged 19, was one of several people who kicked and stamped on Charlie Weston on 14 September after he tried to put a ticket on an illegally parked car.

The 21-year-old warden, from Wolverhampton, managed to call a colleague who alerted police as Mr Weston lay on the ground fearing he would be killed.

The 21-year-old, who works for private contractor NSL on behalf of Birmingham City Council, was taken to hospital but despite the level of violence used in the attack, he did not suffer serious injuries.

Mr Weston’s moped was also stolen in the attack as his assailants fled the scene.

A video of the assault, which took place in Hartopp Road in Birmingham – where Bashir lives – showed the former security guard being repeatedly struck in the head and body by a group of men.

It drew widespread condemnation after being circulated on social media. Detective Sergeant Tom Lyons, of West Midlands Police (WMP), said footage of the attack left him “absolutely furious”.

“The level of violence used is truly shocking, and I know every right-minded person who views it will share that anger,” he added at the time.

Bashir, who handed himself in following a police appeal, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm at Birmingham Crown Court on Tuesday. He will be sentenced on 23 November.

WMP is still appealing for information about the other attackers, who are yet to be identified. The force previously released images of six men suspected of being involved but no one apart from Bashir has been arrested.
