Police have arrested two people on suspicion of murder, after a toddler died in Manchester over the weekend.

The 22-month-old girl was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after reports she was having a medical episode at a house in Wythenshawe.

But she was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival.

After a post-mortem examination revealed the girl had suffered "unexplained injuries" before her death, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) launched a murder investigation.

The force have arrested a 34-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man on suspicion of murder. Both have been taken into custody for questioning.

“Investigations into all deaths are upsetting but when a young child is involved it is truly heart-breaking," said Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin.

“We currently have specially trained officers supporting this little girl’s loved ones at this difficult time and our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this distressing incident.

“We also have a dedicated team of detectives working to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. If you know something or believe you might have some information about this death, then please contact us immediately.”

The force urged anyone with any information can call police on 0161 856 6777 or contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
