Northern Ireland's police chief has warned that dissident republicans are in competition.

PSNI Chief Constable Matt Baggott said that a spike in attacks – one every week for a month – was an additional major challenge for his force, which is also preparing for a tense marching season and the G8 summit in June.

"The recklessness of their attacks is beyond measure," he said. "There is competitiveness between these groups… which is completely irrational but could end up in real tragedy."
