Two teenage boys arrested as 14-year-old girl dies ‘after taking class A drugs’
‘I would urge anyone who has acquired MDMA or other illegal drugs recently not to take them’, detective chief inspector says
Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of offences involving the supply of Class A drugs following the death of a 14-year-old girl in Scarborough.
The child, who has not yet been named, was taken to hospital by ambulance after falling ill in a property in the north Yorkshire town on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, she passed away shortly after being admitted.
A second girl, aged 13, remains in hospital, North Yorkshire police confirmed. Her condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
One teenage suspect has since been released pending investigation, while the second remains in police custody.
Following the death the force's detective chief inspector Graeme Wright urged any member of the public who may have acquired MDMA, or other illicit substances, not to take them.
“First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young girl who died as a result of this tragic event, and of all those affected by it", he said.
“Extensive police enquiries are ongoing to determine the events around her death.
“Although our investigation is at an early stage, I would urge anyone who has acquired MDMA or other illegal drugs recently not to take them. If you have taken such a drug and feel unwell, it is vital that you seek medical help immediately.
“This is clearly a devastating incident, and I would ask everyone to respect the privacy of the families involved, and refrain from speculating about this incident online.”
Those with information about the incident have been asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference 12200084012. Reports can also be made to the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111
