Police were today investigating the cause of an explosion in Northern Ireland.

There are no reports of any injuries following the incident in Carrickrovaddy Road, Newtownhamilton, Co Armagh.

The explosion was reported shortly before 5.30pm yesterday.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokeswoman said an investigation is underway.

"There are no reports of any injuries at this time," she said.

It is understood the explosion took place under a bridge on the small rural road between Belleek and Newtownhamilton.

SDLP Assembly member Dominic Bradley condemned those behind the incident.

"It looks as if it was aimed at police travelling through the area," he said.

"The bridge itself is not a major piece of infrastructure which wouldn't have been targeted, so they must have been using the bridge to disguise the device for passing police."

Hitting out at those responsible, Mr Bradley added: "It was wrong in the past and it's wrong today. It serves no purpose. The vast majority of people in south Armagh reject this sort of activity."
