An leading plastic surgeon is in a serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed by an intruder who broke into his home.

Graeme Perks, 65, suffered chest and abdomen injuries during the attack in Halam Hill, Nottinghamshire, at 4.15am on Thursday.

The doctor was alerted to the break-in by the sound of glass smashing and was attacked after he went to investigate the noise.

He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he underwent surgery.

Nottinghamshire Police detained a 55-year-old man on Thursday in connection with the stabbing and have called on anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Perks’s colleagues have voiced their admiration for him and shock at the attack.

Ruth Waters, president of the Board for the International Confederation of Plastic Surgery Societies (BAPRAS), a position formerly held by Mr Perks, said: "I have benefited from his kindness, generosity and extensive knowledge throughout my career in plastic surgery.

"It has therefore been no surprise to me that as news of this terrible attack has spread, we have been contacted by colleagues from around the world.

"All have expressed their shock at what has happened and also their deep concern for his well being and their hope for his speedy recovery."

Another consultant plastic surgeon, Mark Henley, said it had been his “pleasure and privilege” to work with Mr Perks for 26 years.

“We are all willing him on,” Mr Henly added.

Detective Inspector Gayle Hart, of Nottinghamshire Police, said the surgeon “in a serious but stable condition” in intensive care.

Anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious in the area between 2am and 5am on Thursday can  contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 44 of 14 January 2021, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
