A murder investigation is underway after the body of an elderly woman was found in a freezer, according to reports.
Police discovered the body on Friday in a council flat in Portsmouth, after receiving calls from council workers concerned for the welfare of a pensioner, the Portsmouth News has reported.
The woman has been named locally as Louise Brough.
A Hampshire police spokesperson said: “Officers attended the address following a call from Portsmouth City Council. There were concerns for the welfare of an older woman living in a council property.
“A 53-year-old man from Southsea was arrested on suspicion of murder and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
“He is due to report back to police in November. Initial enquiries show there is no risk to the wider community.”
Witnesses say police officers with dogs turned up to the flat and forced entry after receiving no response.
The ground floor property has been cordoned off by police while door-to-door enquiries are been carried out.
A 53-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and has been released on bail.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Tuesday.
