Murder hunt police find two televisions

Detectives investigating the murder of an elderly couple found dead in their home on Good Friday have found two televisions they were hunting for as part of the inquiry.

Guiseppe and Caterina Massaro, 80 and 77, were found at their home in Woden Road, Wolverhampton, on Friday.

They were attacked with a hammer and knife, police said yesterday.

Today West Midlands Police said they had recovered two televisions outlined in a media appeal yesterday.

A spokeswoman said the televisions were recovered from addresses in Wolverhampton.

Police said three men arrested in connection with the case - two from Wolverhampton, aged 32 and 21, and a 30-year-old from Birmingham - continue to be questioned today.

Warrants of further detention run out later this afternoon and at midnight tonight.

Yesterday the Italian couple's devastated grandchildren revealed how they were due to become great-grandparents in the summer.

The couple's granddaughter, Lindsey Booth, 23, who found their bodies, said: "Our grandparents came to England in the 1960s to look for work and to create a better life for themselves.

"Since being in the country they did nothing but work hard in order to provide for their two daughters - our mothers - and, after becoming grandparents to seven grandchildren, this summer they were expected to become great grandparents to two twin girls, which is unfortunately no longer the case."

Miss Booth also said the family, both in England and in Italy, could not "even begin to grasp the evil that took place in their house and how frightened they would have been".

Detectives have not yet released any details about the "sustained and frenzied attack" other than to say that they believe a hammer and a knife were used.

Detective Superintendent Keith Wilson said Mr Massaro had "defensive wounds" to parts of his body, and there was also evidence of a burglary.

He said: "On arrival, officers found that the house had been ransacked and, in relation to the actual premises, we could see that a lot of property had been moved around the house."

The couple's car, a black Peugeot 307 registration PK56 VRW, was taken, and later recovered from nearby Wednesfield, along with the two televisions that have now been recovered.

Police today continued a plea for more information, urging anyone with any details to get in touch.
