The family home set alight by Mick and Mairead Philpott, killing six of their children, is to set be demolished, Derby City Council has announced.

The council plans to bulldoze 18 Victory Road, along with the next door house, which has no-one living in it.

The building, which remains blackened and boarded up from the fire in May last year, has become a daily reminder of the tragedy for local residents.

The council said it will ask local people in the Allenton district of the city to decide what to place at the site of the house, with an online petition already calling for a memorial to the six children to be built.

Jade Philpott, 10 and her brothers Duwayne, 13, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jesse, six and Jayden, five, all died in the fire.

Last week their parents, along with friend Paul Mosley, were convicted of starting the fire and jailed for manslaughter.  

Council leader Paul Bayliss said: “Who would want to live in a house where six children have died and why would you want to live next door to a house where six children have died?”

However, a number of legal loopholes remain before the council can legally demolish the two houses. No. 18, a three-bedroom semi-detached house, is owned by the council and managed by Derby Homes, the Derby Telegraph reported, but the registered tenants are still the Philpotts.

A local community organisation will consult residents of Victory Road about their wishes for the site’s future. An online petition has been launched, calling for the houses to be demolished and replaced with a memorial garden.

Mick Philpott, 56, was jailed for life on Wednesday after being convicted of manslaughter. His wife Mairead, 32, and friend Paul Mosley, received 17-year sentences.

CCTV footage has emerged showing the Philpotts enjoying a karaoke session at a local pub days after the fire, which was started in the early hours of May 11, as part of a plot to frame Philpott’s former girlfriend Lisa Willis.

The Philpott’s poured petrol into the hallway of the property before setting it alight and planned to rescue the children and portray themselves as heroes.
