Increased police presence at major shopping centre after teenage boy left with leg injuries

A teenage boy is in hospital after knife attack at Sheffield shopping centre (Meadowhall)

Police are hunting an attacker who stabbed a 16-year-old boy outside a Sheffield shopping centre.

Emergency services were called to the taxi rank outside Meadowhall at 7.20pm on Monday to reports that a teenage boy had been assaulted.

The victim was taken to hospital with stab wounds to his leg, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

No arrests have been made and the attacker is still at large.

A South Yorkshire spokesperson told The Independent: "There is an increased police presence around Meadowhall as officers gather information to ascertain the circumstances of the incident."

Videos posted to Twitter and Facebook showed police cars diverting vehicles away from the entrance to the centre closest to Argos in the wake of the stabbing.

Witnesses say a cordon was set up as forensic officers were examining the scenes last night.

There have been eight fatal stabbings in Sheffield so far this year, with knife crime in the city and nationally on the rise.

Meadowhall is one of the largest shopping centres in Britain, attracting a reported total of 25 million people a year.
