A 65-year-old man found alongside a dead woman in her cottage is under police guard in hospital today as he receives treatment for "serious injuries".

The woman was found by police officers in her home in the rural village of Stoke Climsland, near Callington, Cornwall.

Following forensic examinations, which are continuing, police said they were not looking for anyone else over the case.

The man is under police guard at Derriford hospital in Plymouth.

Devon and Cornwall Police were called to the house at about 1pm yesterday after concern was raised for the welfare of the woman.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said officers were called when the woman failed to turn up for work, which was described as out of character.

He added a cordon was in place around the property and crime scene officers were examining the scene.

A police spokesman said yesterday: "This is a very early stage in this inquiry and we have not had the opportunity to speak with the injured man at this time as he is undergoing hospital treatment.

"Until we speak to the injured man we will not have a clearer picture of what occurred."

The woman has not yet been formally identified and her death is being treated as unexplained.

Police appealed for anyone who may have been in the area yesterday morning and who may have witnessed anything unusual to contact the force on 08452 777 444.
