A murder investigation has begun after a man was found stabbed to death at the home of Herbie Hide, the former world heavyweight boxing champion.

The man, who was in his twenties, was pronounced dead at the scene after officers were called to a party at the house near Norwich early yesterday, police confirmed. Police said they would question each of the more than 100 people who were at the party.

Detective Superintendent Julian Gregory, of the joint Norfolk and Suffolk Major Investigation Team, who is overseeing the investigation, said initial inquiries suggested that Mr Hide, pictured, was not at the house when the man was stabbed but it is understood police will interview him.

Officers spoke to more than 100 people at the party but reports suggested as many as 300 had been present. The victim has not been named and a Home Office post mortem examination began yesterday afternoon. "There is a picture beginning to emerge which suggests that there was a dispute or an altercation. This happened at a crowded party, it happened in front of people so there were witnesses," said Det Supt Gregory.

"The person who has done this needs to know that we will get to them, so if they have a story to tell it is better that they come forward and tell it to us sooner rather than later. We are in the process of confirming the victim's identity and police Family Liaison Officers have been assigned to work with next of kin."

Mr Hide, 40, and his family have moved out of the home in Bawburgh, to the west of Norwich, while police investigate. The boxer, known as The Dancing Destroyer, was born in Nigeria but grew up in England. In 2009, he was declared bankrupt for the second time after coming out of retirement to fight at the lower cruiserweight division.
