A homeowner has been taken to hospital with life changing injuries after being shot in the leg by a burglar during a robbery at his house.

The victim, a man in his 40s, had locked himself in his bedroom in the early hours of 6 February, after realising the burglary was taking place, but was hit with a bullet when the burglars fired shots through the locked door, ITV reported.

It is believed that the victim was threatened by the men prior to the shots being fired, although they did not take anything from the property, according to the BBC – leaving empty handed after the shooting.

Police are now hunting for two armed men, who are described as being white and of slim build, aged in their 20s.

Officers have already carried out a search of the area around the Rectory Road property in Sible Hedingham, Essex, but have not managed to find the attackers, however they are believed to be continuing their investigation at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
