A man was killed and a teenager injured in an apparent gangland double shooting near a funeral in South-east London yesterday.
Police were trying to establish whether the victims were among the 500 mourners attending the burial of Joel Morgan, a 17-year-old who died in a car crash. Up to six shots are thought to have been fired from outside Camberwell Old Cemetery, in East Dulwich. Paramedics spent an hour trying to save one of the wounded – a man in his early 20s – but he was declared dead at the scene.
A female mourner said: "We were around the grave site and [Joel] was being lowered into the ground and there was a series of gunshots fired. People didn't know whether the noise was fireworks or not. We saw people on the other side of the fence running away. People close to the grave continued to put dirt into the ground because they couldn't really hear anything, the crowd was so thick."
Ian Moss, landlord of The Rose pub nearby, said two men ran into his bar soon after the shooting and went straight into the toilets. A few minutes later, they left and walked "slowly and casually" towards a crowd that had gathered at the scene.
Police said three men arrested were being questioned last night.
