Man held in 1988 rape probe

A 57-year-old man was arrested today by police investigating the rape of a young woman 22 years ago.

The suspect was held in Rishton, Lancashire, by officers from Kent Police's cold case investigation team.

He was being taken to Kent for questioning about the rape of a 20-year-old woman in Canterbury in August 1988, a Kent Police spokesman said.

The arrest follows a re-investigation of the crime in conjunction with the Forensic Science Service.
