A man has been arrested after a 10-year-old girl died when she was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing.

The youngster, who was from Stevenage but has not been named, was knocked down by a white Mercedes at the crossing opposite an Asda superstore on Monkswood Way, Stevenage.

A spokeswoman for Hertfordshire Police said the girl was taken to hospital after the incident, which happened around 4pm yesterday, but later died.

She said: "A 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the collision."

The road was closed for about three hours for investigations to take place, she added.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information about the collision to contact Pc Bob Hauxwell on 0845 3300 222.
