A 64-year-old man who was found dead in a hole dug by electricity workers was identified by police today.

The body of Reginald Cadman, whose death is being treated as unexplained, was discovered by passers-by in West Bromwich, West Midlands, at about 11.30pm on Friday.

Police attempted to resuscitate Mr Cadman at the scene in Stoney Lane while waiting for an ambulance, but he was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital

Detective Inspector Derek Packham, who is leading the investigation, said a forensic post-mortem examination had proved inconclusive and further tests would now be carried out.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, he added: "We are particularly keen to hear from a man and a woman who were near the A41 footbridge and who helped another witness call 999 for assistance.

"We would also like to hear from two young men who were in the area.

"These four are not suspects, but may have important information which may explain what happened."
