A man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison after he repeatedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend in the head with a screwdriver.

Ahmed Ali, 34, assaulted his 26-year-old former partner with a brick at her home in Grangetown, Cardiff.

He chased her to a nearby shop after she escaped and stabbed her several times in the head and neck with a screwdriver.

Several members of the public intervened and the police were called to the scene.

Armed officers arrived within 15 minutes and arrested Ali.

Ali, of Christina Street, Butetown, admitted the charge of attempted murder and was sentenced to 14 years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court on Thursday.

Detective Constable Geraint Higgins, from South Wales Police Cardiff, said: “This was an extremely vicious domestic assault that resulted in shocking injuries including fractures to the skull and multiple stab wounds to the neck and head which required emergency surgery.

“Clearly such injuries could have had a more tragic outcome but thankfully the victim survived and continues to recover from this ordeal.”

Hours before the assault, Ali had attempted to buy two large carving knives from a local Asda, only to be turned down when he provided staff false ID.

DC Higgins added: “It is important to praise the vigilance and actions of the Asda staff who intervened when Ali attempted to buy two large knives just hours before the attack.

“We would also like to thank the members of the local community who so bravely helped on the day and have supported our the investigation.

“We hope today’s sentencing reassures the victim and gives her some closure to what was a terrifying incident.”
