A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a grandmother was found dead in her home on Christmas Eve, police have said.

Officers discovered 48-year-old Lesley Caile and an injured man at her home in Hunwick, near Crook, County Durham, on Monday morning.

Ms Caile worked at Durham County Council's Children's and Young People's Services Department and had two grown-up children and three grandchildren.

The injured man was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, with injuries which were not life-threatening. He was in a stable condition.

The 46-year-old, who lived at the same address in North View, has now been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Superintendent Ken Donnelly said: "We are investigating a violent death in tragic circumstances.

"Officers are working to establish the facts and piece together the events that led to Lesley's death."
