A man was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of a young graduate who vanished 14 years ago.

Melanie Hall went missing after a night out in Bath in June 1996. Her remains were discovered at the side of the M5 motorway last October.

Avon and Somerset Police said yesterday that a 38-year-old man from Bath was being held and would be interviewed in connection with her murder and the disposal of her body.

Ms Hall, a psychology graduate, had been at a nightclub with friends and her boyfriend of three weeks, Philip Karlbaum, who left the club "upset" after seeing her dancing with another man.

Ms Hall's parents spoke of their "untold anguish" shortly after officers confirmed the human remains found by the motorway were those of their daughter.
