A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman's body was discovered inside a house.

West Midlands Police said the woman was found at a property in Awson Street, Edgwick, Coventry, last night.

A 28-year-old man from Coventry was arrested by police in London and later transported back to the West Midlands where he currently remains in custody, a force spokesman said.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course on the woman, who is yet to be formally identified.

Detective Inspector Warren Hines, from Force CID, said: "We first became concerned about the address when a man raised the alarm at Bishopsgate police station in central London.

"The investigation is still in its early stages as we look to establish exactly the circumstances that led to this woman losing her life.

"We're not looking for anyone else in connection with the inquiry but I would urge anyone who has any information about what happened to come forward."

Chief Inspector Tim Metcalfe, from Coventry Police, said officers would be in the area during the next few days.

He said: "People living in and around Awson Street will understandably be alarmed by what's happened.

"Local officers will be in the area over the coming days and I would urge anyone who has any concerns to speak to them. Alternatively, you can give the neighbourhood policing team a call on 101."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Force CID on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
