Man racially abused nursery children and beat lollipop warden with own stick
Daryl Jones jailed for 35 months after ‘downright disgusting’ crime spree
A racist who beat a lollipop man with his own sign, yelled abuse at nursery school children and smeared faeces over a police cell has been jailed for nearly three years.
Daryl Jones, 33, began the “downright disgusting” crime spree one afternoon in April last year after hailing a taxi with three friends in Birmingham.
During the journey he began racially abusing the Asian driver during a row over a phone charger before punching him in the face.
Jones then opened the windows and began swearing at passers-by in the Kings Heath area.
When the taxi stopped, he got out – leaving his glasses, phone, driving licence and bank card – and walked off to confront a lollipop man helping children to cross the road.
He then grabbed the traffic sign and assaulted the lollipop man, before shouting racial insults at pupils at a nearby nursery on Chamberlain Road.
As police responded to a series of calls from members of the public, Jones went on to smash the windscreen of a parked car and collapse in a bush.
When officers arrived to arrest him he threatened to spit at them and hurl more racist abuse.
And even when he was locked in a police cell he continued his rampage by smearing his own faeces over the whole cell.
Jones, of Offenham Covert, Kings Norton, later pleaded guilty to assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, racially aggravated assault and racially aggravated and racially aggravated harassment.
Last week he was sentenced to 35 months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court.
“Jones’ behaviour was completely unacceptable and quite frankly, downright disgusting,” said PC Amanda Winter of West Midlands Police.
“We wish to thank the numerous victims and the community for their resilience and bravery when confronting this man.”
