Woman fined for dropping Greggs paper bag 11 years ago

A woman has been fined for littering over 10 years ago – reportedly with a Greggs paper bag.

Grace Firth pleaded guilty to the offence and was ordered to pay £40 by Stockport Magistrates’ Court.

She was also handed a £15 victim surcharge on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the court said.

Ms Firth was reportedly convicted in her absence in August 2009 and fined £175, as well as charged £180 for a costs order.

The litter she dropped was a paper bag from Greggs, according to the BBC.

Ms Firth reportedly told the court she had no idea about the fine – until she was alerted this December about a “historical debt”.

She claimed that all previous letters were sent to her mother’s house, where mail adressed to her was either discarded or returned to sender, according to the BBC.

Even though Ms Firth claimed she did not know about the proceedings launched against her a decade ago, she pleaded guilty to the original offence of littering.

Her fine was reduced to £40 plus the victim surcharge by Stockport Magistrates’ Court.

“Thank you for being so honest and for turning up,” Edward Tasker, the chairman, reportedly said.
