Leyton stabbing: Man charged with attempted murder of police officer in London

Twenty-eight-year-old officer in serious but stable condition, police say

A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer in east London.

Muhammed Rodwan, 56, of Villiers Close, Luton, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in connection with the attack.

He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning.

PC Stuart Outten remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, police said on Friday.

The 28-year-old’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Mr Outten managed to Taser his attacker during the assault, which lasted seconds.

The attack happened after the patrol officer tried to stop a van suspected of having no insurance.

Metropolitan Police Federation chairman Ken Marsh said: “Police officers across London are out there every day at risk protecting the public – and sadly, yet again, a Metropolitan Police officer has suffered a severe injury on duty.

“Enough is enough. Police officers should be going home at the end of their shifts. Not to hospital.”

Boris Johnson offered his sympathies to the injured officer.

The prime minister said: “What this underscores for me is the bravery of our police, people who actually go towards danger to keep us safer.”
