Eight people charged over Leicester unrest

Charges include making threats to kill and possessing an offensive weapon

Eight people have now been charged in relation to the unrest that has erupted in Leicester.

The city has been rocked by confrontations and clashes between Hindu and Muslim men, with patrols even redirected from the Queen’s funeral to cope.

MPs and locals said tensions had been simmering for months before they erupted into violence this month.

Police said a total of 47 people had been arrested over the recent disorder in east Leicester.

As of Friday night, eight people from the city had been charged with a number of offences, including drink driving, making threats to kill and possessing an offensive weapon.

Four have been charged with the single offence of possession of an offensive weapon: 27-year-old Akshay Jiva from Rotherby Avenue, 26-year-old Sanket Dansukh from Mornington Street, 20-year-old Amos Noromh from Illingworth Road and 21-year-old Adam Yusuf from Bruin Street.

Noromh has been sentenced to 10 months in prison. The others are awaiting court appearances.

Lukman Patel, a 31-year-old from Homeway Road, has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, as well as a public order offence and a racially aggravated public order offence.

One man, 28-year-old Aslan Ibrahim from Canon Street, has been charged with making threats to kill.

Meanwhile, two men have been charged with drink driving: Paresh Pravin, a 25-year-old from Langford Way, and Rahul Manikane, a 21-year-old from Clevedon Crescent.

The men were arrested between 6 September and 19 September.

In a message to the community ahead of the weekend, Leicester Police said it would “not stand for trouble” on its streets.

It said there had been a period of calm during the week and officers would be carrying out patrols over the weekend.
