Latest police raids take number of arrests from summer riots to 3,423

Police launched a series of raids on suspected summer rioters yesterday, Scotland Yard said.

Search warrants were executed at about 100 addresses across London in the early hours in a bid to arrest those involved in the August disturbances. The Metropolitan Police said the public had helped to identify many of the suspects wanted over the violence and disorder seen across the capital.

Detective Superintendent Robin Bhairam said: "There are still a number of people we wish to speak with and I would encourage anyone who has any information to please let us know."

Four months on from the disorder, the Met has made 3,423 arrests and 2,179 people have been charged or summonsed. Meanwhile, Conservative Lord Harris of Peckham said yesterday that the Home Office plans to cut some rioting victims' compensation after they received donations to help them get back on their feet.

Desperate families left homeless by the disorder in August will have compensation docked because they accepted £2,500 each from the Conservative peer.
