Up to 60 valuable koi carp believed to be worth around £4,000 have been stolen from a pond in Suffolk.

Local police have launched an appeal for witnesses or information after the fish were stolen from a residential property in Clare.

“The incident happened at a residential property on Bridewell Street sometime overnight between Saturday 11 January and Sunday 12 January,” said Suffolk police.

The thieves are thought to have jumped over the fence behind the property, but it was unclear how the operation was carried out.

An average adult koi carp can grow over three feet long and weigh around 12kg at that length.

“Anybody who saw anything suspicious at this time, has been offered koi carp fish for sale or who has any information are asked to contact Suffolk police quoting reference 37/2724/20,” police added.

Depending on their size, age, markings and lineage, koi carp can be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. According to Business Insider, the most expensive koi fish ever sold was worth US$1.8 million at the All Japan Koi Show in 2017.
