Kevin Spacey has been charged with four counts of sexual assault in the UK, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

The US actor has been charged in connection with incidents involving three men, alleged to have taken place in London between March 2005 and August 2008, and in Gloucestershire in April 2013.

The CPS said the 62-year-old has also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent.

All three men are now in their thirties and forties, the Metropolitan Police said.

The announcement of the charges follows a review of the evidence gathered by the Met in its previous investigation into sexual assault claims against the actor, which began in 2017.

Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS special crime division, said. the service had “authorised criminal charges” against Spacey.

“The CPS reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against Mr Spacey are active and that he has the right to a fair trial,” Ms Ainslie added.

The actor starred in a film that was screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month. Noir drama Peter Five Eight was his first leading role in five years.

Mr Spacey is a two-time Oscar winner and known for starring roles in American Beauty, The Usual Suspects and Netflix political drama House Of Cards.

He was previously artistic director of the Old Vic theatre in London.
