The body of Jordan Watson was found at the cemetery on Tuesday morning
A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a 14-year-old boy was discovered in a cemetery in Cumbria.
The body of Jordan Watson was found at the cemetery in Manor Road, Carlisle, at about 7.46am on Tuesday.
A post-mortem examination has revealed the teenager died from multiple wounds to the head and neck caused by a sharp implement, in what police have called a "savage and brutal attack".
Detective Superintendent Andrew Slattery, who is leading the investigation, said: "Jordan has lost his life as a result of a savage and brutal attack which has shocked the officers working on the case.
"For a child to die in these circumstances in Carlisle is appalling.
"The offender or offenders must be apprehended and I appeal to any members of the public with information to come forward.
"If anybody heard or saw anything unusual in the area of the cemetery on Manor Road overnight, I would urge them to report it to our incident room."
Police have increased patrols across the Carlisle area while the investigation continues, the force has said.
Anyone with information should contact police on 101 and speak to an officer from North Cumbria CID.
