John Worboys, the “black-cab rapist” convicted of 19 attacks on 12 women, has been questioned about new allegations of sexual assault.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police are examining “a number” of claims of sexual assault and administering a substance with intent to commit a sexual offence.

They interviewed Worboys - who was jailed in 2009 for drugging and raping women in his cab - under caution last month.

The 61-year-old was convicted of 19 offences against 12 women, but is believed to have attacked more than 100.

He was jailed indefinitely in 2009 with a minimum term of eight years after being found guilty of the offences including rape, sexual assault and drugging late-night passengers.

The offences now under investigation are alleged to have taken place between 1997 and 2007.

The taxi driver, who has changed his name to John Radford since being in jail in Wakefield, was told this year the parole board had agreed his release, prompting uproar and legal challenges by some of his victims.

News of his imminent release was reported to have prompted five more women to come forward to police with allegations about him.

High court judges ruled in March that the decision to release Worboys should be quashed, which led to the departure of parole board chairman Nick Hardwick.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "An investigation was launched in January 2018 after a number of women contacted police with information.

"Since then, officers have assessed all the information provided and established there are a number of allegations that required investigation.

"Police also sought early investigative advice from the Crown Prosecution Service.

"The man was interviewed at a venue in Yorkshire on Wednesday 4 July. The investigation continues."
