A man in Leeds has been charged with the attempted murder of two police officers.

James Leslie, 37, is accused of shooting one officer, a 33-year-old woman, in Wednesday's early hours. She was shot whilst attending a routine call in the Hyde Park area of the city.

Her partner was unhurt, but she suffered serious injuries to her head, neck and right hand. She remains in a stable condition.

Mr Leslie was arrested about a mile away from the shooting.

West Yorkshire Police said he had also been charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, possession of a prohibited firearm, criminal damage and possession of cannabis.

He was remanded in custody and was due to appear at Leeds Magistrates Court on Friday.
