A 90-year-old man has been left fighting for his life after he was seriously injured in a hit-and-run crash involving a moped.

The pensioner suffered serious leg and head injuries and was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The Metropolitan Police was called to Central Street in Islington, north London, after reports of a collision between a moped and a pedestrian shortly before 9pm on Monday.

His family have been informed.

The moped rider was flung off the vehicle but climbed back on and left the scene after the incident, officers said.

The driver’s helmet was left behind at the scene.

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are dealing with the incident and are making efforts to locate the driver.

A spokesperson said: "The driver of the black moped involved in the collision came off the moped following the incident and their red open-faced crash helmet was left at the scene.

"The moped driver did however get back on to the damaged moped and make off from the scene."
