Headteacher's killer back in jail

The killer of headteacher Philip Lawrence was back behind bars today despite being cleared of using his infamy to carry out a cashpoint mugging.

Learco Chindamo, 31, was recalled to prison in November over claims that he robbed David Sexton, 20, at a cashpoint after boasting about the killing.

But despite being acquitted by a jury yesterday, he faces at least another year in jail after breaching the terms of his licence by meeting a gang member, breaking a curfew and failing a breath test, it is understood.

Harry Fletcher, assistant general secretary of the National Association of Probation Officers, said he had been recalled to jail for a breach of trust.

"There will be a hearing to see if that was justified," he said.

Chindamo, of Catford, south London, was jailed for life with a minimum of 12 years after stabbing Mr Lawrence outside his school in west London in 1995.

He was paroled in July last year but rearrested amid accusations that he intimidated and robbed Mr Sexton at a cash machine.

Chindamo allegedly accosted him outside a Sainsbury's store with the words "Do you remember about the headteacher in Maida Vale?" as he ordered him to hand over his money.

Following the collapse of three previous trials, he was acquitted of robbery at London's Blackfriars Crown Court.
