A young actor who appeared in a television drama series about gangland crime in Ireland - which has been shown by Channel 5 in Britain - has been shot by a lone gunman in Dublin.

Leroy Harris, who played a part in three episodes of the controversial Love/Hate, was wounded in the leg in the early hours of Friday morning as he walked through Dublin’s north inner-city – an area which has been plagued by gangland crime. The actor last year admitted a charge of having a quantity of cannabis for sale or supply in the same area in which he was shot.

Harris, 20, was treated in hospital for what was said to a be non-life threatening injury. Irish police believe the shooting may have been a case of mistaken identity.

Love/Hate has been a major success for the Irish national broadcaster RTE, winning critical acclaim, international sales and several Irish television awards.
