Feminist stalker hounded Labour MP Stella Creasy, court hears
The messages were 'disturbing' and used 'violent language', say prosecutors
Labour MP Stella Creasy was subject to a “disturbing” campaign of harassment from a feminist stalker, a court has been told.
Prosecutors said Corinna Anne Loughlin, 44, bombarded Ms Creasy, MP for Walthamstow, with messages using abusive language and expressed thoughts about harming people.
The emails and letters sent to Ms Creasy also described what she wore at public appearances and about how the sender had met members of the MP’s family, the court heard.
Ms Creasy never replied to the messages, which were sent for 21 months between January 2015 and September 2016, but they continued.
"She [Ms Creasy] felt harassed by the sheer number of emails and distressed by the violent language,” said prosecutor Balbir Suri, The Telegraph reported.
"She [Loughlin] said she had followed Ms Creasy because she was a feminist, as she was, and would now follow a real feminist, Theresa May.
"It is clear to see the escalation of the stalking and the nature of these messages were clearly disturbing."
Loughlin was arrested on 16 September and has apologised to the MP. Defence lawyers said she was having a mental breakdown at the time, the newspaper reported.
She will be sentenced after a psychiatric report has been completed.
It is not the first time Ms Creasy was subject to harassment.
She was forced to have a panic button installed in her home after being abused online.
Peter Nunn, a blogger from Bristol, was sentenced to 18 weeks imprisonment in September 2014 for sending messages to Ms Creasy calling her a witch and retweeting rape threats.
She and other feminist campaigners were harrased after expressing support for the image of author Jane Austen to be placed on a banknote.
